Which basic phones can make calls on which network

A simple phone needs either the network's 2G service or 4G calling (VoLTE) to make calls. 3G is gone or going, 2G is being switched off, and some networks never had it. We checked 6 phones sold in Ireland against 9 networks.

Findings

  • As of 24 Oct 2026, none of the 6 basic phones sold in Ireland is confirmed to make 4G calls on all 3 big networks.

  • As of 24 Oct 2026, all 6 basic phones sold in Ireland make calls on eir over 2G but none is confirmed to make 4G calls there, so they may stop working when 2G is switched off.

eir: eir keeps 2G: calls and texts on phones without 4G calling move onto it. eir finishes switching off 3G on 28 October 2026.

Three: Three hasn't announced a 2G switch-off. It began closing 3G in late 2024 but hasn't given a date for finishing.

Vodafone: Vodafone has no plan to switch off 2G, which carries its core voice coverage. Its 3G network closed in October 2024.
