A simple phone needs either the network's 2G service or 4G calling (VoLTE) to make calls. 3G is gone or going, 2G is being switched off, and some networks never had it. We checked 6 phones sold in India against 3 networks.

Findings

As of 25 Oct 2026, 5 of the 6 basic phones sold in India make calls on Airtel over 2G but aren't confirmed to make 4G calls there, so they may stop working when 2G is switched off. #
As of 25 Oct 2026, 1 of the 6 basic phones sold in India is confirmed to make 4G calls on Jio. #
As of 25 Oct 2026, 4 of the 6 basic phones sold in India are confirmed to make 4G calls on Vi (Vodafone Idea). #
As of 25 Oct 2026, 1 of the 6 basic phones sold in India makes calls on Vi (Vodafone Idea) over 2G but isn't confirmed to make 4G calls there, so it may stop working when 2G is switched off. #

Airtel: Airtel keeps 2G for feature-phone users and hasn't announced a date to close it. It closed 3G circle by circle from 2019.

Jio: Jio has never run 2G or 3G: calls only work over 4G calling (VoLTE), so 2G-only keypad phones can't make calls on Jio.

Vi (Vodafone Idea): Vi still runs 2G and hasn't announced a date to close it. It has closed 3G in some circles (Maharashtra, Gujarat, Mumbai, Kolkata and Andhra Pradesh by January 2024) and aimed to finish by March 2025.

4G calls: Makes calls over 4G. Unaffected when 2G is switched off.
2G only: Makes calls today using 2G. Stops when the network switches 2G off, unless it gets 4G calling.
Not confirmed: We can't confirm it makes calls on this network, so we don't recommend it there.
No calls: Based on its specs, it can't make calls on this network.
